Ysgol Gymraeg Nant Gwenlli is one of four Welsh-Medium primary schools in Newport and when fully open, will be the largest in the area. We first opened our doors to pupils in September 2021 to meet the increasing demand for Welsh-Medium education.
While we were originally based in Caerleon, we have now moved into our permanent home in the Pillgwenlly area of Newport which has been renovated to a very high standard.
‘Nant Gwenlli’ came about due to the topography of the area. Pillgwenlly’s historic docks play a large role in the industrial past of Newport and the word ‘Pîl’ indicates a tidal inlet from the sea. ‘Nant’ in Welsh derives the streams and reens of the area, while ‘Gwenlli’ partly retains the areas familiar name but also means ‘White Flood or Sea’.
Our logo celebrates the maritime culture of Newport and we embrace this nautical theme throughout the school.
